The McGill Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program was established in 2013 as a result of a partnership between the university and the Mastercard Foundation. Young African leaders who excel in the classroom can enroll in prestigious colleges throughout the globe thanks to this initiative.
There will be 91 scholars from Sub-Saharan Africa accepted into the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at McGill during a ten-year period, including 24 master’s students. Unique to McGill, some Scholars come from French-speaking countries, and they get intensive English language training before beginning their degree programs.
The McGill Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program offers customized training that is in line with the leadership paradigm of Scholars and prepares Scholars to deal with the many transitions they experience at McGill and beyond.

The Foundation for Mastercard The selection of scholars is based on their proven dedication to making a difference. Our programming supports the active and passive leadership development provided to all McGill students, with a particular focus on Scholars’ distinctive leadership paradigm. Programs are cohort-based, and Scholars support one another in developing as leaders.
The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program provides financial support to Scholars for up to two internships in their home countries, typically from May to August. These internships give Scholars the ability to network and gain knowledge about the African professional landscape. Internships help Scholars expand their professional networks and acquire knowledge and abilities that are useful for their academic pursuits and future jobs.
Scholars have had an impact on every facet of African economic, intellectual, and social life. The diversity of McGill’s Scholars is reflected in the diversity of their internship experiences, which range from Tanzanian hospitals to mines in Ghana; working with young people in Rwandese and Malawi; and living in thriving cities, rural areas, and business towns.
A two-way relationship exists between Scholars and upper-year McGill students called peer mentorship. During the first year, two mentors are matched with two Scholars in order to form a Peer Mentorship Circle. This approach aims to expose mentors and scholars to a wider variety of people, interests, and viewpoints.
Peer Mentors give guidance on how to get around McGill life in a way that helps Scholars succeed and transition. Despite the differences between each Scholar and Mentor, they all have a dedication to achieving academic success, developing as a leader, and feeling a sense of civic obligation.
